From January 1, 2027, United MileagePlus members earn Premier status on Premier qualifying points (PQP) alone, and Premier 1K rises from 28,000 PQP to 32,000 PQP. Silver, Gold and Platinum stay at 6,000, 12,000 and 18,000 PQP, but the cheaper route that mixed flight counts with fewer PQP disappears. United posted the changes on its What’s new page on October 13, 2026.
PQP is United’s status currency. You earn roughly 1 PQP per $1 of United airfare before taxes, plus PQP from card spending, upgrades and award flights, and the total sets your elite status for the following year.
What changed
- Before: each tier had two paths. Silver took 15 Premier qualifying flights (PQF) plus 5,000 PQP, or 6,000 PQP alone. 1K took 60 PQF plus 22,000 PQP, or 28,000 PQP alone, per United’s Premier qualification page.
- Now: PQP only, starting with activity on January 1, 2027. Silver needs 6,000 PQP, Gold 12,000 PQP, Platinum 18,000 PQP and 1K 32,000 PQP.
- Still required: at least 4 flights on United or United Express in the year. Partner flights earn PQP but don’t count toward the 4.
- Starter PQP: hold an eligible United card by December 31, 2026, and earn 2027 Premier status, and United deposits 5% of your tier’s threshold. That’s 300 PQP for Silver, 600 PQP for Gold, 900 PQP for Platinum and 1,600 PQP for 1K.
- Upgrades: for travel from February 1, 2027, the number of PlusPoints an upgrade costs varies with demand, per United’s PlusPoints page. United announced that part earlier.
- Who it affects: members who reached status on cheap fares and many segments, anyone chasing 1K, and Premier members without a United card.

- The flight rule: United says, “We’re removing Premier qualifying flights (PQF) requirements, but you’ll still need to take at least four United or United Express flights in 2027.”
- Card holders only: the 2027 starter deposit goes to members with an eligible United card by December 31, 2026. United’s 2026 deposit went to every Premier member except trial status holders, at 300 PQP to 1,400 PQP.
- Card PQP caps: the United Explorer Card earns 1 PQP per $20, up to 1,000 PQP a year. The United Quest Card earns 1 PQP per $20, up to 18,000 PQP. The United Club Card earns 1 PQP per $15, up to 28,000 PQP in 2026, and United says the Club and Club Business cards can earn up to 32,000 PQP a year from January 1, 2027.
- Annual card bonuses: Quest cardholders get 1,000 bonus PQP a year and Club cardholders get 1,500 bonus PQP a year, each posted within 8 weeks of February 1.
- Timing: the new thresholds apply to status you earn during 2027, which sets your 2028 status. Your 2027 status is still set by the 2026 rules, so the 4-flight minimum and PQF path still apply until December 31.
Who loses the most
The segment runners take the biggest hit. Those are the members who flew many short, cheap flights to collect PQF. Here’s the extra spending each old combination path now needs, at about 1 PQP per $1 of base fare:

A 1K member who used the 60-flight path now needs about $10,000 more in United base fares, a 45% jump on 22,000 PQP. A 1K member who already qualified on 28,000 PQP alone needs 4,000 PQP more, about 14%.
The second group is Premier members without a United card. In 2026, a Platinum member got 900 PQP for nothing. In 2027, that same member gets the deposit only by holding a card. United’s page doesn’t mention any deposit for members without one.
Our take
We think this is a devaluation for the people United most wants to keep, and a modest card sales pitch for everyone else. The 1K jump is the real change. Silver, Gold and Platinum members who already qualified on PQP alone lose nothing except the free deposit.
The card math is worth running. A 1K member with the $695 Club Card gets the 1,600 PQP starter deposit and the 1,500 bonus PQP, and from 2027 the card’s spending cap rises to 32,000 PQP. Card spending alone could cover the other 28,900 PQP (32,000 minus 3,100), but at 1 PQP per $15 that takes $433,500 of spending, which isn’t realistic for most households. You’d still need 4 United flights, and most 1K members will still get there by flying.
For a Gold member, the United Explorer Card is the cheap fix. It’s $0 the first year, then $150, and holding it by December 31 protects a 600 PQP deposit worth roughly $600 of airfare toward 2028 status. The card’s miles are a separate question, and our points valuation guide puts most airline miles at 1 to 1.5 cents each. Open it only if you want the card anyway. We wouldn’t add a card for 600 PQP alone.

Act before December 31 if you fly United enough for status and don’t hold a United card. Skip it if you earn status with American or Delta.
