United status gets harder to earn on January 1, 2027, but a United credit card still gives you extra Saver award seats to book. On about 1 in 3 United flights with Saver awards, United holds seats only cardholders and Premier members can book, including Polaris business class. Cardholders also pay at least 10% fewer miles, and the United Explorer Card costs $0 the first year, then $150.

The short version

  • Status in 2027: Silver needs 6,000 PQP, roughly $6,000 of United base fares if you earn it all from flying, at about 1 PQP per $1.
  • Cardholder Saver seats: United says about a third of flights with Saver awards have extra seats only cardholders and Premier members can book.
  • Award discount: cardholders pay at least 10% fewer miles on United flights, and Premier members at least 15% fewer.
  • Our search: a nonstop San Francisco to Tokyo business seat priced at 90,000 miles + $5.60 for February 9, 2027, with seats.aero’s United cardholder setting on.
  • Welcome offers: 40,000 to 90,000 miles on the six United cards, plus 10,000 more for adding an authorized user or employee card.

What changes in 2027

From January 1, 2027, United drops Premier qualifying flights, so United MileagePlus status depends only on PQP. You earn roughly 1 PQP per $1 of United airfare before taxes, and our United 2027 status post has the full rules.

Tier PQP needed in 2027 Rough United base fares, flying only
Silver 6,000 PQP about $6,000
Gold 12,000 PQP about $12,000
Platinum 18,000 PQP about $18,000
1K 32,000 PQP about $32,000

The fare column assumes every PQP comes from flying United, at about 1 PQP per $1 of base fare. Taxes aren’t counted, and card spending, partner flights and the cardholder starter PQP lower the total. You also need at least 4 flights on United or United Express in the year. Cheap fares with extra connections no longer help, which hits travelers who earned elite status on flight counts.

What a United card gets you on award flights

United gave cardholders two award perks in February 2026, and both used to belong to Premier members. United announced both on February 19. It says “about a third of flights that have Saver Award fares available, have exclusive inventory just for cardholders and Premier members.” The release names London, Hawaii, Florida, Cancun and Tokyo as examples.

  • Extra Saver seats in every cabin: Chase’s Explorer benefits page lists expanded Saver access in United Economy, United Business, United Polaris business class and United First on two-cabin planes.
  • Polaris Saver seats: United says cardholders now see Polaris business class Saver space that used to be limited to Platinum and 1K members.
  • Award discount: at least 10% off every United flight award for cardholders, and at least 15% off for Premier members. A 15,000-mile economy award costs a cardholder 13,500 miles.
  • Polaris example: United says Polaris Saver awards start at 80,000 miles, or 72,000 miles for a cardholder. At 1.3 cents per mile, our working value from the points valuation guide, those 8,000 miles are worth about $104 on one booking.
  • Primary cardholder only: United’s terms limit the discount to “the primary Cardmember’s MileagePlus account.” Authorized users don’t get the extra seats or the discount.

So for award travel, the card puts you in the same Saver pool as a Premier member. Status still adds complimentary upgrades, better seats and the larger 15% discount. The card covers the seats most people book with miles.

Our seats.aero search: Tokyo in business for 90,000 miles

We searched San Francisco to Tokyo for February 9, 2027, on October 12, 2026, while recording our seats.aero guide. We used a seats.aero PRO account with its United cardholder setting turned on, which shows the cardholder-only space.

seats.aero results for San Francisco to Tokyo on February 9, 2027, sorted by business class, with United MileagePlus at 90,000 miles plus $5.60 and 3 seats, Atmos at 150,000 points and Emirates at 201,000 miles

That seat is most likely gone now, since award space changes every day. The six United cards compared

All six cards come from Chase. The four personal cards raised their welcome offers on October 1, and our United card offers post runs the math on each one.

Card Annual fee Welcome offer Saver seats and award discount Checked bags Card PQP cap
United Gateway $0 40,000 miles after $1,000 Only after $10,000 spend in a year None until $10,000 spend None
United Explorer $0 first year, then $150 70,000 miles after $3,000 Yes First bag, you and 1 companion 1,000 PQP
United Quest $350 80,000 miles after $4,000, plus 500 PQP after the first purchase Yes First and second bags 18,000 PQP, plus 1,000 bonus PQP a year
United Club $695 90,000 miles after $5,000 Yes First and second bags 28,000 PQP (32,000 PQP from 2027), plus 1,500 bonus PQP a year

United Club Business $695 90,000 miles + 2,000 PQP after $5,000 Yes First and second bags 28,000 PQP (32,000 PQP from 2027)

Every card’s spending window is 3 months. Each personal card adds 10,000 miles for an authorized user, and each business card adds 10,000 miles for an employee card, both within the first 3 months.

Tip: the United Gateway Card gets the Saver seats and the discount only after $10,000 of spending in a calendar year. For award flyers, the Explorer is the cheapest card that gets them from day one.

The business cards: a side hustle counts

You don’t need an LLC or a corporation for the United Business Card. Chase’s guide to business cards without a formal business says sole proprietors can apply with their Social Security number and their own name as the business name. Selling things online counts, so reselling on eBay or Facebook Marketplace, tutoring or rideshare driving all qualify as long as the work produces income.

  • Offer: 90,000 miles + 2,000 PQP after $5,000 in 3 months, on both business cards.
  • Pairing bonus: hold the United Business Card and a personal United card and get 5,000 bonus miles every card anniversary.
  • Chase’s 5/24 rule: Chase declines most applicants with 5 or more new personal cards in 24 months. One Mile at a Time reports that Chase business cards don’t add to that count, but you still need to be under 5/24 to get approved.

Our business credit cards tag covers the other business cards worth pairing.

Pros and cons

What we like:

  • The same Saver pool as Premier members. About a third of flights with Saver awards have extra seats only cardholders and Premier members can book.
  • Polaris business class included. Cardholders see Polaris Saver space that used to need Platinum or 1K status.
  • At least 10% off awards. A 72,000-mile Polaris Saver instead of 80,000 saves 8,000 miles, about $104.
  • Low cost of entry. The Explorer costs $0 the first year, then $150, against about $6,000 of United base fares for Silver if you fly for it.
  • Big welcome offers right now. 70,000 to 90,000 miles on the Explorer, Quest, Club and both business cards.

What we don’t:

  • Primary cardholder only. An authorized user on your card doesn’t get the extra seats or the discount.
  • The Gateway lags. Its holders wait for $10,000 of spending in a calendar year.
  • Status still wins on upgrades. Premier members get a 15% discount and upgrade chances the card doesn’t give.
  • United miles only book United and partners. Flexible points from Chase move to United 1:1 and to other airlines too, as our best travel credit cards guide explains.

Who it’s best for

A good fit if:

  • You fly United a few times a year without status. The card gets you the award seats Silver would, without flying about $6,000 of fares.
  • You want Polaris on miles. Cardholder Polaris Saver seats start at 72,000 miles, against 80,000 miles for everyone else.
  • You’re losing a flight-count status path. Travelers who earned Premier status on segments keep the award perk with a card.
  • You have a side hustle. The United Business Card pays 90,000 miles + 2,000 PQP and needs no LLC.

You can probably skip it if:

  • You already hold Premier status. You get the same seats and a bigger discount, so add a card only for bags, lounges or PQP.
  • You rarely fly United. A flexible card such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred keeps more options open.
  • You’re over Chase’s 5/24 limit. Chase will likely decline the application.

How to book cardholder Saver awards, step by step

These steps take you from opening the card to booking the seat.

Step 1: Open a United card in your own name

Pick the Explorer for the lowest fee, or the Quest or Club if you want bags, PQP or lounges. Only the primary cardholder’s MileagePlus account gets the extra seats.

Chase asks for your MileagePlus number on the application. Check that your United account shows the card before you search, since the cardholder price only appears on a linked account.

Step 3: Search on united.com while signed in

Search with miles and look for Saver fares. United says cardholders save about 30% on average when they book Saver awards under its “Cardmembers Save” banner.

Step 4: Scan the whole year with seats.aero

Turn on the United cardholder setting in seats.aero PRO to see the extra space across every date. Our seats.aero guide walks through filters and alerts.

Step 5: Book it before it’s gone

Book on united.com once you find the seat. If you need more miles, Chase Ultimate Rewards points transfer to United at 1:1.

The bottom line

We think United’s 2027 change makes a United card the cheaper way to get the award perk most travelers wanted from status. Earning Silver by flying now takes about $6,000 of United Airlines base fares, while the Explorer costs $0 the first year and $150 after that. Both put you in the same cardholder and Premier Saver pool, Polaris business class included.

With welcome offers between 70,000 and 90,000 miles on five of the six cards, now is a good time to pick one up. Our Best Cards page lists all six side by side. If you decide to apply, our Chase referral link works for every United card, and we earn a referral bonus if you’re approved, at no cost to you. Thank you for supporting TravelPointsPro.

FAQ

Do United cardholders get the same award seats as Premier members?

Yes. United says the exclusive Saver inventory is for “cardholders and Premier members.” Premier members get a 15% award discount, while cardholders get 10%.

Does the United Gateway Card get the extra Saver seats?

Only after you spend $10,000 on it in a calendar year. Until then it gets neither the extra seats nor the 10% discount.

Do authorized users get cardholder award pricing?

No. United limits the discount to the primary cardmember’s MileagePlus account, and the extra Saver seats follow the same rule.

Can I get the United Business Card without an LLC?

Yes. Chase says sole proprietors can apply with their Social Security number and their own name, and side income such as selling online counts.

How much does United Polaris business class cost with miles?

United says Polaris Saver awards start at 80,000 miles, or 72,000 miles for cardholders. Our San Francisco to Tokyo search found 90,000 miles + $5.60 for February 9, 2027.
