Through December 31, 2028, the owner of a Citi / AAdvantage Business World Elite Mastercard earns 1 Loyalty Point for every Loyalty Point an employee card earns on purchases. The employee keeps their own Loyalty Points too, so $1 of employee spending now builds AAdvantage status in two accounts.
The promotion was due to end December 31, 2026. It’s limited to “select” cardmembers, so check your eligibility before you route spending through employee cards.
The deal
- Offer: The primary cardmember earns 1 Loyalty Point for every 1 Loyalty Point earned by authorized users on eligible purchases.

- Dates: Employee Loyalty Points posting from January 1, 2025 through December 31, 2028.
- Who gets it: Select cardmembers. We found no public sign-up form on American’s terms page.
- Annual fee: $0 the first year, then $99. Employee cards cost nothing.

Key terms
The terms live on American’s global sales promotion page:
- Targeted: The offer is “only for select” Citi AAdvantage Business cardmembers and is not transferable.
- Timing: Allow 8 to 10 weeks after the employee’s Loyalty Points post for the matching Loyalty Points to reach the primary account.
- Eligible purchases: Net purchases by an authorized user. Balance transfers, cash advances, fees, money orders, wire transfers, lottery tickets and gaming chips are excluded.
- Self-referral ban: American will pull back Loyalty Points for fraud, “including when the Primary Cardmember registers themselves as an Authorized User.”
- Closing or switching: Close the card or switch products during the promotion and you lose eligibility, since the account must be open and in good standing at fulfillment.
- Old points: Employee Loyalty Points posted before January 1, 2025 don’t count.
The self-referral line settles a question Frequent Miler raised in its October 10 write-up. You can’t add yourself as an employee to double your own spending.
How the card normally earns
Without the promotion, Loyalty Points follow the person holding the card. Citi’s FAQ on the card page says each cardmember earns 1 Loyalty Point per $1 on their own purchases, and an employee’s Loyalty Points post to the employee’s own AAdvantage account. The miles go elsewhere: every card’s miles land in the company’s AAdvantage Business account.
Employees only earn their Loyalty Points once they’re registered in both AAdvantage and the AAdvantage Business program, according to the same Citi page. Register each employee before their first charge.
The American-run card page lists 2 miles per $1 at American, gas stations, car rentals and telecom, and 1 mile per $1 elsewhere. New accounts get 65,000 bonus miles after $4,000 in purchases in the first 4 months. Businesses with a bonus on this card in the past 48 months don’t qualify.
The status math
American’s status overview sets the tiers at 40,000 Loyalty Points for Gold, 75,000 for Platinum, 125,000 for Platinum Pro and 200,000 for Executive Platinum. The qualification year runs from March 1 to the end of February.
| Owner’s own spend | Employee spend | Owner’s Loyalty Points | Owner’s tier |
|---|---|---|---|
| $20,000 | $20,000 | 40,000 Loyalty Points | Gold |
| $25,000 | $50,000 (two cards at $25,000) | 75,000 Loyalty Points | Platinum |
| $40,000 | $85,000 | 125,000 Loyalty Points | Platinum Pro |
| $50,000 | $150,000 | 200,000 Loyalty Points | Executive Platinum |
In the Platinum row, each of the two employees also finishes with 25,000 Loyalty Points of their own. That’s not enough for Gold alone, but it’s a head start before any flights.
One timing catch. American’s credit card terms say card Loyalty Points take 8 to 10 weeks to post, and the matched points need another 8 to 10 weeks. Employee spending in January or February probably lands in the owner’s account after March 1, which counts toward the next qualification year.
Our take
We like this promotion most for small companies whose owner already wants American status and a few employees put real expenses on the card. Before, a $50,000-a-year employee card earned the owner nothing toward status. Now it earns the owner 50,000 Loyalty Points, which is more than Gold by itself.
The earning on miles is ordinary. At 1 mile per $1 on most spending, and the 1 to 1.5 cents per airline mile in our points valuations guide, the business gets 1% to 1.5% back. If miles are the goal, Citi’s Strata Premier and Strata Elite transfer to American at 1:1, as our Citi ThankYou guide explains. This card earns its place through status, and the $99 fee is small next to a year of Platinum complimentary upgrades.
Skip it if you’re a sole operator with no employees. You’d earn the same 1 Loyalty Point per $1 as on a personal card such as the AAdvantage Platinum Select. Heavy spenders chasing Executive Platinum should also compare the AAdvantage Executive card, whose Loyalty Point milestones add up to 40,000 bonus Loyalty Points a year.
If your business already holds the card, check your offers or ask Citi whether your account is enrolled. Our best travel credit cards guide covers where it fits next to other business credit cards.
FAQ
How long does the Citi AAdvantage Business Loyalty Points promotion last?
The terms cover employee Loyalty Points posting from January 1, 2025 through December 31, 2028. It was previously set to end December 31, 2026.
Is the promotion open to every Citi AAdvantage Business cardholder?
No. American’s terms limit it to “select” cardmembers. We found no public registration form, so check with Citi or your offer emails.
Do employees lose Loyalty Points under this promotion?
No. Employees keep the Loyalty Points from their own purchases. The primary cardmember receives a matching amount 8 to 10 weeks later.
Can I add myself as an authorized user to double my Loyalty Points?
No. American’s terms call it fraud when the primary cardmember registers themselves as an authorized user and allow it to pull back the points.
How much employee spending gets the owner to AAdvantage Gold?
With no spending of their own, the owner reaches the 40,000 Loyalty Points for Gold after $40,000 of eligible employee purchases. Any of the owner’s own card spending reduces that figure dollar for dollar.
