United announced 10 new international cities and 13 new routes for 2027 on August 25, 2026, the largest route announcement in the airline's history. Tickets went on sale the same day on united.com and in the United app. United is the only U.S. airline flying nonstop to eight of the ten new cities.

Which cities did United add?
United's 10 new international cities for 2027 span Japan, Portugal, Spain, Italy, France, Luxembourg and Slovenia. Ljubljana and Luxembourg City are the first nonstop U.S. links either country has had. The full list, with start dates from United's announcement:

Why does the A321XLR matter here?
United is flying the Airbus A321XLR on five of the new routes: Luxembourg, Toulouse, Ibiza, Valencia and Marseille. The aircraft carries 32 premium seats, made up of 20 United Polaris suites and 12 United Premium Plus seats, which is 16 more premium seats than the Boeing 757-200 it replaces on thin transatlantic routes.
The practical effect for award bookings is supply. A narrowbody with 20 business class suites flying daily to a small European city produces more Polaris award seats per week than the market would ever have justified with a widebody. Thin routes on small aircraft are where saver space tends to sit unsold longest.
United says the A321XLR starts domestic flying in September 2026 and moves to international service on December 1, beginning with Washington Dulles to Amsterdam and Dublin. Those first international tickets go on sale August 27, 2026.
How should you book these with miles?
Award space on United's new 2027 routes loaded on August 25, 2026, alongside cash fares, which puts you at the front of a 12-month booking window with nobody else in line yet. United MileagePlus uses dynamic pricing, so the number you see today is the cleanest it will be.

Is this expansion a good sign for MileagePlus?
More routes on United metal means more award inventory United controls outright, and that is straightforwardly good for anyone holding MileagePlus miles or Chase points. United CEO Scott Kirby framed the strategy around Newark: "We offer the most flights across the Atlantic and Pacific and Newark is the best Atlantic gateway in the country."
The caveat is dynamic pricing. Extra seats do not guarantee cheap awards, and United has raised prices on popular routes as demand appeared. Seven of the ten new cities route through Newark, so if you live west of the Mississippi, budget miles for the connection too.
What this means for you
If Sicily, Sardinia, the Azores or Slovenia are on your list, search awards this week. New routes at day one of the booking window are the single most reliable place to find saver premium space, and the A321XLR routes carry 20 Polaris suites each.
If you were holding United miles with no plan, this is a reason to make one. If you were holding Chase points, you now have 10 more destinations reachable at a 1:1 transfer. Cheap does not follow automatically from new, so price the cash fare too, especially on the three-times-weekly leisure routes where introductory fares tend to be aggressive.
