Avios Finally Built an Award Calendar — Here's How to Use It

If you've ever tried to find an award seat on the British Airways or Iberia website, you know the specific flavor of misery involved. One week of dates at a time. Frequent errors. Sessions timing out. It feels less like searching for flights and more like negotiating with a hostile filing cabinet.

Well, good news: Avios.com now has a proper month-view calendar search. Bad news: you still can't book anything on it. Let's talk about why it's still a big deal.

First — what are Avios?

Quick primer for anyone new. Avios is a shared points currency used by several airlines: British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus, Finnair, Qatar Airways, Vueling and Loganair. Same currency, different airline programs — a bit like how the same dollars work at different stores.

Avios are popular with U.S. travelers because most major credit card programs let you transfer points into them, and because certain routes price very cheaply. But the search experience has always been the weak link. You could have a pile of Avios and no reasonable way to find out where they'd take you.

What just launched

Frequent Miler reported that Avios.com has quietly added a reward flight calendar search. One Mile at a Time confirmed it as well.

You enter your route, and it shows a full month of award availability at once. There are cabin checkboxes down the left side, so you can filter to just business class and instantly see which days actually have seats. That kind of overview simply wasn't possible before without an enormous amount of clicking.

Readers have also found Aer Lingus availability showing up, even though the tool was billed as British Airways and Iberia only. Nice bonus.

The catches (there are several)

I don't want to oversell this. It's a search tool with real gaps.

You can't book on it

This is the strange one. Avios.com will find you the seat and then hand you off — a button at the bottom sends you to British Airways or Iberia to actually book. So you still have to deal with those websites eventually. You just get to skip the worst part of the process. Why the calendar launched on Avios.com rather than on the airline sites themselves is anyone's guess.

It doesn't show taxes and fees

And with Avios, that's a serious omission. British Airways awards can carry carrier-imposed surcharges — extra cash fees on top of your points that can run into the hundreds of dollars on transatlantic routes. Iberia-operated flights booked through Iberia are usually much gentler. So a flight that looks like a bargain in the calendar might come with a $600 cash bill attached. You won't know until you click through. Always check the total before you commit.

It can't handle connections

This is the biggest limitation. The tool only searches nonstop segments. Want to fly Edinburgh to Miami with a connection in London? It won't let you search that at all — you'd have to search London to Miami and piece the trip together yourself. One reader also found the tool showing an Aer Lingus nonstop that the BA site then refused to sell, only offering a pricier routing through London. Treat what you see as a lead, not a guarantee. Route coverage is patchy too — another reader searching from Montreal found only three destinations available.

How to actually use it

Here's the workflow I'd suggest:

• Start with the calendar to find candidate dates on a nonstop route. This is where it shines — one glance replaces twenty searches.

• Filter to the cabin you want so you're not squinting at economy availability you don't care about.

• Click through to BA or Iberia to confirm the seat is really available and see the full cash cost.

• Only then transfer your points. Never move points into a program on the strength of a search result you haven't verified — transfers are one-way.

That last step matters more than usual right now, because a lot of people have Avios on the brain.

Why this lands at a useful moment

There's currently a 30% transfer bonus from Amex Membership Rewards to Avios programs running through September 27 — we covered that one here. Which means a lot of readers are about to be sitting on a fresh pile of Avios. Having a real search tool arrive the same month is convenient timing. Just remember the order of operations: find the seat first, transfer second. The bonus will still be there in an hour. The award seat might not be.

What this means for you

If you have Avios already: go play with it. Genuinely — the month view will show you routes and dates you'd never have found by hand, and it costs nothing but ten minutes.

If you're considering an Avios transfer: use this to confirm the seats exist before you move anything. That's the entire point of a tool like this.

If you're brand new: don't let the caveats put you off. This is still a large improvement over what existed a week ago, and being able to see a month of availability at once is exactly the kind of thing that makes award booking feel possible instead of mystifying.
