Hilton's 90% Buy-Points Bonus Ends Aug 12

Hilton is running one of its regular buy-points promotions: up to a 90% bonus on purchased points through August 12. Buying points sounds backward to a lot of people - why pay for points? - but done right, it can be a smart way to book an expensive stay for less than the cash rate. Here's the honest math on when this deal works and when it doesn't.

How to know if it's a good deal

There's one number that matters: your cost per point after the bonus. Hilton normally sells points for about 1 cent each, and a 90% bonus drops that to roughly half a cent per point. The test is simple - price the award you want both ways, then compare.

Here's a real example. Say a Conrad night runs 100,000 points or $650 in cash. Buying those 100,000 points at about half a cent each costs you roughly $500 - cheaper than the $650 cash rate, so it's a win (you save about $150). Now flip it: a night that's 40,000 points or $150 cash would cost about $200 in purchased points - more than just paying cash - so you'd skip it and pay the $150. The rule of thumb: if buying the points is clearly cheaper than the cash price for the same room, do it; if it's close or more expensive, don't.

Where buying Hilton points shines

Hilton points are worth the most at aspirational properties where cash rates are sky-high - think Waldorf Astoria and Conrad resorts, or peak-season stays where a night runs $600-plus. Buying discounted points to cover a $700 night can save real money. Hilton's fifth-night-free benefit on award stays for Hilton elites and cardholders stacks nicely here too, stretching purchased points even further on longer trips.

When to skip it

Don't buy points speculatively to have them. Points you don't have a plan for are just prepaid loyalty currency that could get devalued. Also skip it for cheap properties - if a Hampton Inn is $120 cash, buying points to cover it rarely beats just paying. And always confirm award availability at your dates before buying; a great points price is useless if the room isn't bookable.

What this means for you

If you have a specific, expensive Hilton stay in mind and the math shows buying points beats the cash rate, this 90% bonus - ending August 12 - is a legitimately good way to save. If you don't have a concrete booking, let it pass. Buy points to book a trip, never just because there's a bonus.
