Bilt Put Its Card Upgrade Rules in Writing. You Get One Change a Year.
Bilt added formal product change terms to its card agreement on September 18, 2026. Cardholders get one voluntary upgrade or downgrade in any rolling 12-month period. Downgrading within 30 days of an annual fee posting reverses the welcome bonus from the card you are leaving.

What changed since the September beta?
We covered the Bilt card upgrade beta when it opened on September 18, 2026 to Blue and Obsidian holders. At that point upgrades worked but the rules lived nowhere official. The update is that Bilt has now written them into the card offer terms, and downgrades are covered too. Two things are new: a hard cap of one change a year, and a clawback provision on the welcome bonus.
Product changes matter because they let you keep an account's age and credit line while moving to a card with different economics. Closing and reapplying resets both.
How often can you change Bilt cards?
The Bilt card offer terms are direct about frequency. Bilt states that "A Primary Cardholder may complete no more than one voluntary Upgrade or Downgrade in any rolling 12-month period." The clock runs from your last change, not from a calendar year, so an upgrade in November 2026 blocks a downgrade until November 2027.
There is one carve-out. To reverse an upgrade you have until the later of twelve months after your original account open date, or 45 calendar days after the change-in-terms notice. That is the escape hatch if a card's benefits do not match what you expected.
What happens to your welcome bonus if you downgrade?
This is the expensive part. The Bilt terms say that "If you Downgrade within 30 days after the prior Bilt Card's Annual Fee posts, the prior product's Welcome Bonus Bilt Cash is reversed and the destination product's Welcome Bonus is issued in its place." Downgrade a Bilt Palladium to a Bilt Blue inside that window and the Palladium welcome bonus comes out of your account, replaced by whatever the Blue bonus is worth. A negative Bilt Cash balance is possible if you already spent it.
Bilt has not said whether the 30-day clawback attaches only to a renewal annual fee or to the first one as well. Frequent Miler flagged the same ambiguity. Until it is clarified, treat any downgrade within a month of a fee posting as risky.
Which Bilt card should you change to?
The Bilt Palladium costs $495 a year and earns 2X on everyday purchases with up to 1.25X on rent or a mortgage. The Bilt Obsidian costs $95 and the Bilt Blue is free. All three earn up to 1.25X on housing payments with no transaction fee, which is the reason the lineup exists at all.
Our view has not moved: the Palladium earns its fee if you are running real everyday spend through it, and the Obsidian is the better landing spot if you mostly want the housing earn. What this means for you
Decide which Bilt card you want for the next twelve months, then make one move. The one-change-a-year cap removes the option of upgrading for a targeted bonus and downgrading a few months later, which is exactly what it was written to stop. If you are holding a fee-paying Bilt card you no longer want, downgrade well clear of your annual fee date rather than right after it posts.
