BILT Is Letting Blue and Obsidian Cardholders Upgrade. The Welcome Bonus Comes With It.
Bilt is now letting some Bilt Blue and Bilt Obsidian cardholders upgrade to a higher card, in a beta Bilt dates to September 18, 2026. The upgrade keeps your account, skips the hard credit inquiry and pays an upgrade bonus. Early invites to the Bilt Palladium Card show the same 50,000 points new applicants get.
I think this is great news. Bilt allows one card per member, so a cardholder who took the Blue or the Obsidian at launch had no path to the Palladium until now.
The short version
Bilt's program page says upgrades are "in Beta to select cardholders" as of September 18, 2026, and are rolling out in phases.
Blue cardholders see offers for Obsidian or Palladium. Obsidian cardholders see offers for Palladium.
An upgrade to Palladium pays 50,000 Bilt Points and Gold status after $4,000 of everyday spending in 90 days from the change.
You pay the new card's full annual fee and get a full or prorated refund of the old one, about 45 days later.
The $100 Bilt Cash rollover cap has not changed. December 31, 2026 is still the deadline.
Who can upgrade a Bilt card right now?
Bilt is offering card upgrades to select Bilt Blue and Bilt Obsidian cardholders in a phased beta. Bilt's program overview says: "As of September 18, 2026, product upgrades are in Beta to select cardholders and are rolling out in phases." Bilt says it will notify members when upgrades open widely.
To check, log in to Bilt, open your Bilt Card settings and look under Account for an upgrade option. Eligibility is set per card, so you might see an offer for Obsidian and none for Palladium.
The limits:
No upgrade before your first statement closes
One product change in any 12-month period
Only the primary cardholder can request it, and authorized users move to the new card with you
If no offer shows, Bilt says eligibility is reviewed regularly. Points creator Anthony Venture, who reported the first invites on September 20, said Bilt is starting with cardholders who put the most spending on their cards. Bilt has not published its criteria.
This arrives early. In January 2026, Frequent Miler reported Bilt would not support upgrades or downgrades in the first year of the new cards. The cards went live on February 7, so the beta opened a little over seven months in.
What do you get when you upgrade to the Bilt Palladium Card?
An upgrade to the Bilt Palladium Card pays an upgrade bonus shown in the Bilt app at the time you upgrade. Bilt's card offer terms, updated September 18, 2026, say a bonus of 50,000 Bilt Points and Gold status is earned after $4,000 of everyday spending within 90 days of the product change. New Palladium applicants get the same points for the same spending.
The Bilt Cash part is less clear. Anthony Venture reported one Obsidian cardholder whose invite carried the full $300 of Bilt Cash. A Reddit user on the same path reported $100. Obsidian's own welcome bonus was $200, and $100 is the difference. Read the number in your own app before you confirm.
Most issuers pay little or nothing on an upgrade. Bilt paying the full points bonus is the reason I would take the upgrade over waiting.
You also keep things a new application would cost you:
The same account and credit history, with no new hard inquiry
The same card number, with a new expiration date and security code
Your autopay settings, pending transactions and balances
Your credit limit, which stays the same at the time of the change

What happens to the annual fee and the hotel credits?
Bilt charges the full annual fee for your new card and refunds the old card's fee as a separate line. Both post about 45 days after the upgrade. Upgrade within 30 days of your old fee posting and the refund is full. After 30 days, Bilt prorates it for the unused part of your card year. Your card anniversary moves to the new fee date.
Hotel credits follow the same logic. Bilt gives this example: an Obsidian cardholder who already received the $50 credit for the current half-year gets $150 more on upgrading to Palladium, which makes the $200 Palladium amount for the period.
You have a way back. Bilt's terms allow a refund-and-revert until 12 months after your original account opening, or 45 days after the change notice, whichever is later. Bilt then reverses the upgrade bonus and the new card's credits, which can leave a negative points or Bilt Cash balance.
Is the $100 Bilt Cash rollover cap going away?
No. The Bilt Cash rollover cap has not changed as of September 21, 2026. Bilt's Bilt Cash terms still say Bilt Cash earned during a calendar year "will expire at the end of that Year, except that $100 of Bilt Cash will be permitted to 'roll over' to the following Year."
A change has been reported, and it is not live. Anthony Venture, citing another creator's interview with a Bilt executive, said Bilt plans to move Bilt Cash expiration from December 31 to each cardholder's card anniversary. Under the plan, someone who opens a card in September 2026 would keep that Bilt Cash until September 2027. The report did not say the $100 cap itself would go away, and Bilt has published nothing on timing.
Plan around the rule in writing. A cardholder who opens or upgrades to Palladium this month holds $300 to $500 of Bilt Cash with about 100 days to use all but $100 of it.
The fastest use is housing. On the Flexible Bilt Cash option, every $30 of Bilt Cash earns 1,000 points on your rent or mortgage, up to 1X of the payment. $400 of Bilt Cash becomes about 13,300 points. Should you upgrade now or wait?
Take the upgrade to the Bilt Palladium Card if your offer shows the 50,000-point bonus and you will spend $4,000 in 90 days without forcing it. An existing cardholder has no other route to the Palladium, since Bilt allows one card per member. Waiting until your next annual fee posts turns a prorated refund into a full one, and the difference is small.
Skip it if you chose Blue or Obsidian on purpose. The Palladium costs $495 a year, and it pays for itself only if you use the $400 in Bilt Travel hotel credits.
