What does the 30% bonus do to the math?
The Capital One to Japan Airlines Mileage Bank transfer normally runs at 2:1.5, so 1,000 Capital One miles turns into 750 JAL miles. That ratio is the reason most people ignore this partner. The 30% bonus lifts it to 975 JAL miles per 1,000 Capital One miles, a 30% improvement on every mile you move. Transfer 40,000 Capital One miles and you land 39,000 JAL miles instead of 30,000. That gap of 9,000 miles is roughly a third of a one-way economy ticket from Tokyo to the U.S.
This is the fourth time Capital One has run this exact promotion since adding Japan Airlines in September 2025. It appeared in February 2026 and April 2026 too. So a 30% bonus is not rare, and a better one has never shown up.

Is Japan Airlines Mileage Bank worth the miles?
Japan Airlines Mileage Bank prices partner awards on a distance chart rather than a fixed region chart, which produces some unusually low numbers on long routes. Japan Airlines says the required mileage "is determined based on the distance of total award itinerary (total of sector mileage for each sector) and the class of service traveled." Tokyo to Sydney in business class costs 45,000 JAL miles. Tokyo to the continental U.S. runs 27,000 in economy and 55,000 in business.
The redemption drawing attention this week is Air France business class to Tahiti. Japan Airlines charges 85,000 miles round trip from Los Angeles plus about $67 in taxes and fees, or 60,000 miles one way. Air France's own Flying Blue program wants 240,000 miles for the same cabin, plus higher fees. That is a difference of 155,000 miles on one booking.
With the bonus, 85,000 JAL miles costs you about 87,200 Capital One miles. Compare that against redeeming the same Capital One miles at 1 cent through the travel portal and you are looking at roughly $872 of value against a business class fare to French Polynesia that sells for several thousand dollars. How do you book a Japan Airlines partner award?
Japan Airlines Mileage Bank does not show most partner award space online. To book Air France, you call Japan Airlines at 800-525-3663, open 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Central. Expect the call to run 30 to 60 minutes, and have passport details ready for every passenger. Agents should waive the phone booking fee for awards that cannot be booked online.
Two rules bite new members. A new Japan Airlines Mileage Bank account normally waits 60 days before it can redeem, and transferring partner miles in, such as Capital One's, usually cuts that to about 7 to 10 days. And transfers are one way, so miles that land in JAL cannot come back to Capital One.
Confirm the award space on the phone first, then transfer, then call back to ticket. Doing it in the other order is how people end up with 40,000 stranded JAL miles and no seat.
Who should skip this transfer?
Anyone without a specific Japan Airlines redemption in mind should leave their Capital One miles where they are. A 30% bonus that returns four times a year is not scarce enough to justify speculative transferring, and Japan Airlines miles expire 36 months after they are earned. The promotion also does nothing for the flexibility you give up. Capital One miles transfer to more than a dozen programs, and JAL miles transfer to none.
The honest read: this is a great deal if Tahiti, Tokyo or Sydney is already on your list for the next couple of years, and a bad one if you are moving miles because a countdown clock said so.

The bonus has come back three times in thirteen months and the miles keep their flexibility in the meantime.
