What are Atmos Rewards Communities?
Atmos Rewards Communities are six opt-in groups inside Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines’ combined loyalty program, launched on October 1, 2026. Each one layers benefits on top of your existing Atmos Rewards account rather than replacing anything. Alaska says the six Communities “connect members to relevant offers and benefits based on how they travel, where they live and what they enjoy.” You join through your account and pick exactly one.
The six are Families on the Go, Global Locals, Culinary Journeys, Active Escapes, Club 49 and Huakai by Hawaiian. Four are open to everyone. Club 49 is limited to Alaska residents. Huakai by Hawaiian is limited to Hawaii residents.
Every Community shares two perks: up to 10,000 bonus points after you fly to 10 qualifying destinations, and 20% off select Atmos experiences. The difference between them sits in the one benefit each adds on top.
Which Community pays the most?
Families on the Go is the strongest of the six Atmos Rewards Communities for most households with young children. The 20% points refund on award flights for children 12 and under has no annual cap. It covers up to seven children on one reservation, applies to partner awards in every cabin, and the points come back within 24 hours of the trip ending. Taxes and carrier fees are excluded.
Run the numbers on one trip. A family of four books four award seats to Honolulu at 25,000 points each. Two of those seats belong to kids. The refund returns 10,000 points, which is most of a fifth one-way seat.
Global Locals is the pick if you fly internationally and chase status. It adds 10% bonus status points on international flights and gives 1 status point per 25 points transferred in from a partner such as Bilt or Marriott. The second half of that is the unusual part. Transferred points normally earn no status credit anywhere.
Is the kids’ refund worth picking over the status points?
For a family flying two or three award trips a year, the Families on the Go refund beats the Global Locals status points on raw value. Twenty percent back on 50,000 points of children’s awards returns 10,000 Atmos Rewards points. Earning 10,000 status points through the transfer route under Global Locals would take 250,000 transferred points, which is a far larger balance than most people move in a year.
The decision flips if you are short of a status tier and have a large Bilt or Marriott balance sitting idle. Status points are the only currency that buys elite tiers, and points cannot otherwise be converted into them.
Culinary Journeys and Active Escapes add no distinct numeric benefit beyond the shared 10,000-point destination bonus and the 20% experience discount. Pick one of those two only if neither of the first two fits your flying.
What is the catch on switching?
Atmos Rewards Communities allow one change per calendar year, so the choice holds for 12 months once you make it. Alaska opens switching from January 1. If your family situation or your flying pattern changes in March, you wait. That single rule is the reason to think about the next year of travel before you click rather than picking the one with the best name.
What this means for you
Parents of children under 13 who redeem Atmos Rewards points for family trips should join Families on the Go now. The refund is uncapped. The only cost is giving up a different Community for a year.
Global Locals is the answer for international flyers chasing elite status. Take it, then start moving partner points.
Residents of Alaska and Hawaii get free checked bags from their local Communities, which beats a points refund on almost any math. Club 49 covers two free bags to and from Alaska and three for flights within the state.
Everyone else should sit on Culinary Journeys or Active Escapes and collect the shared destination bonus. None of this changes how you earn points day to day, which Alaska reworked separately in its three new earning options starting January 1, 2027. FAQ
Does joining an Atmos Rewards Community cost anything?
No. All six Atmos Rewards Communities are free to join, and membership does not require an Alaska Airlines or Hawaiian Airlines credit card. You select one from inside your Atmos Rewards account.
Do my children need their own Atmos Rewards accounts for the 20% refund?
No. Under Families on the Go, only the adult paying the points needs to belong to the Community. Children do not need to be enrolled, and one reservation covers up to seven of them.
How long does the Families on the Go points refund take?
Points post within 24 hours of the completed trip. The refund applies to the points portion of the award and excludes taxes and carrier-imposed fees.
Can I belong to more than one Atmos Rewards Community?
No. You hold one Atmos Rewards Community at a time and change it once per calendar year, with switching available from January 1.
Does the Global Locals transfer benefit work with Bilt and Marriott points?
Yes. Global Locals awards 1 status point for every 25 Atmos Rewards points transferred in from an eligible partner, and both Bilt Rewards and Marriott Bonvoy are named partners. The points themselves transfer at their normal ratio.
When does the Huakai by Hawaiian interisland bonus start?
The 50% bonus points and status points on interisland travel begin January 1, 2027. The free checked bags on neighbor island flights apply now.
The bottom line
Six free Communities, one pick, one change a year. Families with young children should take the 20% award refund and stop reading. Everyone else is choosing between a status-points edge and a destination bonus they will collect either way.
