A pop-up now appears during a Citi Strata application when your history rules out the welcome bonus, and it shows up before the application is finished. You get two choices at this point: keep going without the bonus, or cancel. AwardWallet reported the pop-up on October 5, 2026 from a Citi Strata Premier application.

This is an update to our post on Citi’s once-per-lifetime Strata bonus rule from September 22. What’s new: Citi will tell you where you stand before the hard pull instead of after the card arrives.

What changed

  • Before: The Citi Strata terms already barred a bonus to anyone who currently has or previously had the card. You only learned you were shut out after approval, when the bonus never posted.
  • Now: Since about October 5, 2026, the application flow shows a pop-up when Citi decides you aren’t eligible for the new account bonus. The message says you’re pre-qualified for the card and not for the bonus.
  • Cards it covers: The pop-up has only been reported on the Strata family. AwardWallet saw no pop-up on the Citi Double Cash, which still uses 48-month language.
  • Who it affects: Anyone who held a Citi Strata Premier, the older Citi Premier, a Citi Strata Elite, a Citi Strata or a Citi Strata Student account at any point.
  • Your options: Continue the application without the bonus, or cancel it.

Key terms

Each card’s application page carries its own sentence, and the wording is identical apart from the products it names. All three were live on Citi’s pages on October 12, 2026.

  • Citi Strata Premier: The Strata Premier page says the bonus is not available if you “currently have or previously had a Citi Strata Premier® or a Citi Premier® account.”
  • Citi Strata Elite: The Strata Elite page names only the Citi Strata Elite account.
  • Citi Strata: The no-fee Citi Strata page names the Citi Strata and the Citi Strata Student account. Our September post didn’t cover the student card, so treat an old student account as a blocker.
  • Discretion clause: All three pages add that you might also be ineligible based on “your history of opening, closing and using credit cards.”
  • Non-Strata cards: The Citi Double Cash page and the Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select page still block a bonus only if you earned one in the past 48 months.

The credit check behind the pop-up

AwardWallet says the pop-up stated reviewing the offer would not affect your credit score. This matches how Citi describes pre-qualification, which runs on a soft inquiry. The hard inquiry comes only when you submit. Citi’s own pre-qualification explainer says “A hard credit inquiry can lower your credit score by a few points for about a year.”

Under the September rule, someone who forgot about a Citi Premier closed in 2019 would take the hard pull, get approved and wait months for a bonus that never came. Now the warning arrives before the pull, so the mistake costs nothing.

We’d still check your own history first. AwardWallet did not say whether every applicant sees the pop-up or only people who start from a pre-qualified offer, and Citi hasn’t documented it anywhere we found. If no pop-up appears, you’re probably eligible, but we wouldn’t treat its absence as a guarantee yet.

How to use it

  1. Log into Citi and look at your closed accounts for any Premier, Strata Premier, Strata, Strata Student or Strata Elite.
  2. Start the application for the card you want and watch for the eligibility message before you submit.
  3. If the pop-up says you’re not eligible, cancel unless you want the card for its benefits alone.

Tip: Holding one Strata card does not block the other two, because each card’s terms name only its own products. A pop-up on the Strata Premier says nothing about your chances on the Strata Elite.

Our take

We like this change. It doesn’t loosen the lifetime rule, but it removes the worst outcome under it: a hard pull and an annual fee for a card you only wanted for the bonus.

The math shows why. Say a Strata Premier offer is 60,000 ThankYou points. At the 1.9 cents per point we use for Citi ThankYou in our points valuations guide, the bonus is worth about $1,140. Without it, you’re paying the Strata Premier’s $95 annual fee for the earning alone, and a few points off your credit score for about a year.

Who should act: if you have never held any of the three Strata products, nothing changes. Pick your order with our guide to the Citi ThankYou and Strata cards, and use the pop-up as a free check before you submit. Anyone who held an old Citi Premier should run the application up to the pop-up and cancel if it appears. Our best travel credit cards guide lists the Chase and Amex alternatives worth your hard pull instead.

Who should skip it: if you only want the Strata Premier for transfer partners such as Japan Airlines and Avianca LifeMiles and already know you’re ineligible, the pop-up tells you nothing new.

FAQ

Does Citi tell you if you aren’t eligible for the Strata bonus?

Yes. Since about October 5, 2026, Citi shows a pop-up during Strata applications when your history rules out the new account bonus. You then choose to continue without the bonus or cancel.

Does the Citi Strata eligibility pop-up hurt your credit score?

AwardWallet reports the pop-up said reviewing the offer would not affect your credit score. Citi says pre-qualification uses a soft inquiry, and the hard inquiry comes only when you submit the application.

Which Citi cards show the bonus eligibility pop-up?

It has only been reported on the Strata family: the Citi Strata, Citi Strata Premier and Citi Strata Elite. The Citi Double Cash showed no pop-up and still uses a 48-month rule.

Does an old Citi Strata Student card block the Citi Strata bonus?

Yes. The Citi Strata application page says the bonus is unavailable if you currently have or previously had a Citi Strata or a Citi Strata Student account.

Did Citi change the once-per-lifetime rule again?

No. The lifetime language from September 2026 is the same on all three Strata pages. The pop-up only tells you about it before you submit.
