From January 1, 2027, a Fine Hotels + Resorts booking through American Express has to be at least two nights to earn the Amex Platinum card’s $600 credit. On October 22, Amex also added Airbnb to Amex Travel, made Airbnb Luxe homes eligible for the credit and introduced a $250 Airbnb Experiences credit. If you use the credit on one-night stays today, the change can cost you up to $600 a year.

Amex now calls the benefit the $600 Lodging Credit, up to $300 each half of the year. It applies to both the consumer Platinum and the Business Platinum, which each carry an $895 annual fee.

What changed

  • Before: any prepaid Fine Hotels + Resorts (FHR) booking through Amex Travel earned up to $300 back per half-year, even a single night. The Hotel Collection already required two nights.
  • Now: the Platinum card page says FHR bookings “will require a minimum two-night stay to be eligible for the $600 Hotel Credit,” effective January 1, 2027.
  • Also new: prepaid Airbnb Luxe stays of two nights or more booked through Amex Travel count toward the same credit.
  • New credit: up to $250 a year back on Airbnb Experiences bought with the card, after you book a prepaid Airbnb Luxe stay through Amex Travel that year.
  • Earning: Platinum cardholders earn 5X Membership Rewards points on prepaid Airbnb bookings through Amex Travel, and other Membership Rewards cards earn 2X.
  • Who it affects: Platinum and Business Platinum cardholders who book one-night FHR stays to use the credit before each June 30 and December 31 deadline.

Key terms

  • The 2027 rule: single FHR nights stay bookable with the usual FHR perks, AwardWallet reports. They won’t trigger the statement credit. Amex’s Lodging Credit page lists the eligible bookings.
  • Airbnb Luxe: Amex’s October 22 announcement says “Prepaid Airbnb Luxe bookings of two nights or more are eligible for the annual $600 Lodging Credit.”
  • Experiences credit: once the Luxe booking is confirmed, “Card Members can get up to $250 in statement credits through the remainder of that calendar year,” per the same release. It joins the other card benefits on the Platinum.
  • What doesn’t count: Experiences that send you to a third-party site, such as live event tickets, don’t qualify, per Airbnb’s announcement.
  • How Airbnb bookings work: you link your Amex and Airbnb accounts and book from over 1 million listings on the Homes tab of Amex Travel. Changes and host messages stay on Airbnb.
  • Where to book: Amex’s Airbnb page on Amex Travel. Booking directly on Airbnb.com doesn’t earn the credit or the 5X.

What the change costs

Here’s a $500-a-night FHR hotel, the kind of property where a single night used to cover most of each $300 credit:

Booking Cost before the credit Credit What you pay
1 night in 2026 $500 $300 $200
1 night in 2027 $500 $0 $500
2 nights in 2027 $1,000 $300 $700

If you only wanted one night, the credit is gone. If you’d take a second night anyway, the credit still covers $300 of it. Someone who booked two single nights a year to use both halves of the credit now pays $600 more, or books a pair of two-night stays.

The Airbnb side adds value for a smaller group of vacation rental bookers. A $2,000 two-night Airbnb Luxe booking at 5X earns 10,000 points, worth $200 at the 2.0 cents per point in our points valuation guide. Add the $300 credit and up to $250 back on Experiences, and that trip returns up to $750.

Our take

This is a devaluation for the people who used the credit most efficiently. Amex’s Howard Grosfield framed the launch as choice. “Travel is personal and where our Card Members choose to stay is personal,” he said. For a cardholder who booked one city night every six months, the choice now costs an extra night or the credit.

Amex hasn’t said whether the rule follows the booking date or the stay date. To be safe, use the July to December $300 on a stay you book and complete before December 31, 2026. From 2027, we’d plan the credit around trips you already take that run two nights or longer, at hotels or Airbnb Luxe homes.

If neither fits, add up the credits you’ll use against the $895 fee before your next renewal. Our Platinum offer post lists the other credits, our FHR guide covers the perks that still apply to one-night stays, and the best travel credit cards guide compares cheaper options. One Mile at a Time covered the change the morning it posted.

FAQ

When does the Amex Platinum two-night minimum start?

January 1, 2027. Amex hasn’t said whether it goes by booking date or stay date, so a one-night stay booked and completed in 2026 is the safe way to use the current rules.

Does a one-night FHR stay still get the FHR perks in 2027?

Yes, AwardWallet reports single nights stay bookable with FHR perks. They don’t earn the $300 statement credit.

How many points does Amex Platinum earn on Airbnb?

5X Membership Rewards points on prepaid Airbnb bookings made through AmexTravel.com or the Amex Travel app. Other Membership Rewards cards earn 2X.

How do I get the $250 Airbnb Experiences credit?

Book a prepaid Airbnb Luxe stay through Amex Travel with your Platinum card. Once it’s confirmed, Airbnb Experiences bought with the card earn up to $250 back for the rest of that calendar year.

Does the Business Platinum get the same changes?

Yes. Amex’s Business Platinum page carries the same two-night rule from January 1, 2027, and the Airbnb benefits cover both Platinum cards.
