Amex Swapped FedEx for UPS on the Business Gold. Check Your Shipping Account.

American Express replaced FedEx with UPS.com in the Business Gold Card's $240 Flexible Business Credit on October 1, 2026. The credit still pays up to $20 a month, and Grubhub and U.S. office supply stores still qualify. If you were running shipping through FedEx to collect that $20, the charge stops triggering the credit now.

The short version

  • The swap took effect October 1, 2026: UPS.com is in, FedEx is out

  • The credit pays up to $20 a month, capped at $240 a year

  • Qualifying merchants are now Grubhub, U.S. office supply stores and UPS.com shipments

  • The American Express Business Gold Card annual fee is $375

  • Enrollment is required, and unused monthly credits do not roll forward

What exactly changed on October 1?

The American Express Business Gold Card carries a $240 Flexible Business Credit that pays out in monthly $20 increments at a short list of merchants. FedEx was on that list since the card's 2024 refresh. As of October 1, 2026, UPS.com takes its place. Amex now describes the benefit this way on its Business Gold card page: "Earn up to $20 in statement credits each month after you use the Card for eligible U.S. purchases at Grubhub, Office Supply Stores, and shipments at UPS.com. Enrollment required."

Nothing else about the credit moved. The dollar amount is the same, the monthly structure is the same, and the other two merchant categories are untouched.

Does this make the credit better or worse?

For most small businesses it is a wash, and for a few it is a real loss. UPS and FedEx cover similar ground on domestic ground and air shipping, so a business with no contract at either one swaps a label vendor and moves on. A business with negotiated FedEx rates has a problem, because those rates are the reason it uses FedEx, and $20 a month is not enough to pay for leaving them.

There is one small improvement buried in the wording. The old benefit covered FedEx purchases broadly. The new one specifies "shipments at UPS.com," which reads narrower than walking into a UPS Store. Treat in-store UPS Store purchases as unproven until someone confirms a credit posting.

Is the $375 annual fee still covered by the credits?

The American Express Business Gold Card charges $375 a year and offers $240 in flexible business credits plus a separate $155 in Walmart Plus monthly credits. On paper that is $395 against a $375 fee, which is how Amex wants the card read. In practice the Walmart Plus credit is only money if you want a Walmart Plus membership, and the $240 requires spending at three specific merchants every single month.

Miss one month and you lose that $20 for good. Twelve clean months of $20 is the only path to the full $240, and most cardholders do not get there. Price the card on its 4X earning structure instead, which pays 4 points per dollar on your top two spending categories each billing cycle out of six eligible ones, up to $150,000 in combined purchases a year.

What should you do this week?

Three things, and none take long. Confirm you are enrolled in the Flexible Business Credit in your Amex account, because the benefit does nothing without it. Move any recurring FedEx label purchases to UPS.com if your rates allow. Then check your October statement in early November to confirm the first $20 posted against a UPS charge rather than quietly failing.

If shipping is a small part of your spending, the easier route is Grubhub or an office supply store. A $20 office supply purchase on the first of the month clears the credit with no thought, and office supply stores are also where gift cards for other merchants live.

What this means for you

This is a small change with a sharp edge. The $240 credit survives intact, but the specific action that earned it for shipping-heavy businesses stopped working on October 1, and Amex did not send most cardholders a warning. Check your enrollment, move the recurring charge, and verify the first posting.

FAQ

Which merchants qualify for the Amex Business Gold $240 credit now?

The American Express Business Gold Card Flexible Business Credit covers eligible U.S. purchases at Grubhub, office supply stores and shipments at UPS.com. FedEx stopped qualifying on October 1, 2026.

Do unused monthly credits carry over?

No. The $240 Flexible Business Credit pays up to $20 per calendar month and unused amounts do not roll into the next month. Twelve separate qualifying months are the only way to collect all $240.

Do you have to enroll in the credit?

Yes. American Express requires enrollment in the Flexible Business Credit through your online account or the Amex app. Purchases made before you enroll do not trigger the statement credit.

What is the Amex Business Gold annual fee?

The American Express Business Gold Card charges a $375 annual fee. It is not waived for the first year.

Does a UPS Store purchase count?

Amex's own wording specifies "shipments at UPS.com," which points to online label purchases rather than a UPS Store counter. Until cardholders confirm in-store postings, buy your labels on UPS.com.
